I often get asked by clients if they should book a morning or sunset session. What better way to offer up my suggestions than to blog it. Personally, I think both sessions are gorgeous in color and light and it is a matter of personal choice. In this post, I will highlight my full hour morning sessions and will talk about my sunset photo sessions in a future blog post. Morning sessions always begin at 9am (or a little earlier). The sun is at the most perfect position for perfect light. It’s not too hot yet because as the hour goes by, it will get hotter… and humidity will strike. Any later start time, the sun is higher in the sky causing squinty eyes. It is hotter in temperature and the hot sun reflecting off the sand into your face is awful, not to mention the hot sand under your bare feet! 9am is the best time.
Isn’t this a gorgeous image? This was taken on the west side of the island and the sky was definitely a brilliant blue with nary a cloud in the sky. I love morning sessions because of the vivid colors that we get during morning photo shoots. The color palette takes on cooler tones where as at sunset, tones tend to be warm and golden.
On a typical Hawaiian weather morning where the sun is beaming, the sky will be a beautiful blue. I say “typical Hawaiian weather morning” because it is not everyday where it is sunny and bright. Sometimes, the weather is overcast with gray skies, sometimes it is a blue with hazy white clouds, sometimes it is a blue sky with ominous looking rain clouds in the distance… see for yourself in this post. Mother Nature is in charge of what you will be getting on that morning…. and more often than not, it is a pretty good looking morning.

Not all sky is the same from day to day and from location to location. Time of year has a lot to do with the atmosphere too, not to get too technical, taking photos has all to do with light and reflection (and of course, the equipment used), so the intensity of the blue-ness of the sky will differ everyday.

Beautiful! I love the colors of the warm sand, the greenery at the left edge of the image and of course that sky. Lots of wispy clouds give this image great visual texture!

Now keep in mind, that it’s not sunny every single day… we do have our off days, lol. I just have to say this because I honestly don’t want to be responsible for what Mother Nature does! LOL
This day above you see a layer of clouds in the air and so obvi the blue of the sky will take a backseat… but still a very gorgeous shot regardless.

***I would suggest for families with wee ones that a morning photo shoot would be the optimal time slot. Simply because there is a time change and little ones sometimes have a hard time with the adjustment. Hawaii is 2 or 3 hours behind California time, depending on daylight savings time. Along with this, a sunset shoot is really hard for the little guys after a full day of play in the sun and in my experience, they just fare better with morning shoots… but with that being said, you know your child best and if you desire a sunset shoot, I would say to go for it… just plan naps for your little ones and make sure you bring snacks for them… because cranky children stress out mom and dad and this is the farthest experience I’d like for you. So just my little 2 cents thrown in there.
