I get this all the time… “I have a little one and he/she is shy/temperamental/hyper (insert your adjective here), I just wanted to let you know ahead of time.” I appreciate the mom’s and dad’s are setting expectation for me, I really, REALLY, do…. but it’s also my obligation to set up expectations for you before our photo shoot. I think that most mom’s have an idea that at our photo shoot their children are going to smile and look right into the camera and smile their happiest of smiles and all will be well. With little ones, this is most likely NOT the case. I’m here to let you know that it’s just not going to happen 100% of the time. What you will get is your child at that exact moment in time, whether it be happy, hungry, cranky, curious, frightened of the sand (or water) or whatever the personality may be at that moment when we meet. My best advise is to EMBRACE it. Yes, EMBRACE it. It will alleviate all stress that you may have if you just allow it to happen, let them be kids…. and go with the flow. Bribes always help and of course, I will do my best to bring out their lovely personalities, but sometimes it’s just not going to happen, but sometimes it does and I will be right there to photograph it. Besides, you’re in Hawaii and there is no room for stress. Photo shoots are about capturing your family in a frame. Photo shoots are about INTERACTING with your family, hugging, laughing, kissing, LOVING. Photo shoots are about telling YOUR STORY at that moment in time. Smiling happy family portraits are great… but when your child is just SO over the entire thing, well… honestly, that really tells the story doesn’t it? Not to mention some memories to laugh about to include in the wedding day slideshows of their childhood.
