Things to Do on Oahu: Hike Diamond Head

oahu-things-to-do-professional-photographer-diamond-head-8My mamma came recently to stay with me and I challenged her to hike up Diamond Head.  I got her excited about the views at the top once she reached it to entice her to  go on the hike.  My mamma has a bum knee with a steal rod in it and she’s also asthmatic so I knew it would be a challenge for her.  The night before I had changed my mind and told her it probably wasn’t a good idea.  I didn’t want to have to call for a helicopter to bring her down.  It must have lit a fire in her because now she REALLY wanted to go.  I told her as long as she took it slow, stopped for a breath when she needed it, heck, at least get to the first look out point, I thought she’d be ok.

Diamond Head, Oahu things to do, professional photographerIt was a perfect day that morning when we arrived at Diamond  Head.  It was a beautiful sunny day with a wonderful welcome breeze.  Had the breeze not been around, the hike would have been uncomfortable.  With each step, my mamma saw how much closer she was getting to the top.  She just kept going at a nice comfortable pace.  Sooner or later we’d make it to the top.

Diamond Head, Oahu Things to Do, Places to VisitI was cheering my mom on with each traversing segment we walked, she was getting closer and closer to the top.  She’d look behind her and see how far she’d come.  The views are just beautiful.  (BTW, that is Koko Head off in the distance.)  Of course I brought my camera with me.  These were taken with my 35mm film camera (want to check it out? Click on the sidebar to the left).  *Sidenote: Why do I shoot in film?  My personal snapshots of my family and such, I have been using my 35mm film camera almost exclusively.  I am blessed to be a busy photographer with a steady stream of clients. It’s easier for me to mail out the film and have it processed for me, otherwise, the digital files will be sitting in my computer waiting to see the light of day.  My clients come first and so for my personal work, I shoot film.

Just look at all the different shades of brilliant blues.  Just incredible.  By this time, my mamma has made it to the top of Diamond Head and is feeling like a hot shot.  She totally IS a HOT SHOT!  She conquered her personal challenge and made it up to the reward.  Needless to say, I was really proud of her.  She’s ready to take on Koko Head on her next visit.  LOL.. *I* haven’t climbed Koko Head yet!!!

Vacation, Travel, Diamond Head, Oahu Things to Do, Professional Photographer, Places to Visit, Places to HikeShe didn’t take the stairs up, but she did take them on the way down.

Vacation, Travel, Diamond Head, Oahu Things to Do, Professional Photographer, Places to Visit, Places to HikeI was just so proud of my mamma.  It was definitely a challenge for her but every little step, she got closer to the top.  The way down was much more faster and she was happy she made it back to the beginning.  I was happy that I didn’t have to call a helicopter to come get her! When you are in Oahu, definitely make the Diamond Head hike.  It’s an easy hike for whipper snapper’s like me.  It’s an inspirational hike for mamma’s like mine.  My mom can definitely put a check mark next to this bucket list item.  She did Fabulous!
